“Neon-Gallus”

In this picture there is an African Trypanosome, the cause of the tropical disease sleeping sickness. This cell has lost the function of the gene TbMORN1 and has become grossly misshapen. The DNA is in blue, the cell surface in green and the flagellar attachment zone, a cytoskeletal filament, in red.

Images were obtained using an inverted microscope (Axio Observer Z1, Carl Zeiss MicroImaging Inc.) equipped with a PCO 1600 camera. Image processing was carried out using ImageJ and AdobePhotoshop CS3 software.
